2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee - Electronic Shifter Malfunction

Question

I have the 'monostable' shifter that always returns to center. This morning, all the letters (P,R,N,D,S) started flashing red and the car wouldn't move out of Park. I had to use the manual release under the console just to get it onto the tow truck.

I'm seeing 'Service Shifter' on the dash. I've heard there was a recall for this, but my VIN says it's already been done. Is this a TCM issue or the actual shifter assembly?

✅ Confirmed fix: The internal circuit board on these shifters is prone to failure due to bad solder joints or liquid spills getting into the microswitches. Replaced the entire Electronic Shift Module (ESM) assembly. Note that you have to perform a 'PROXI alignment' using a scan tool after installation for the car to recognize the new module.

Check the wiring harness under the vehicle going to the ZF 8-speed transmission. There's a plug that often gets corroded or hit by road debris. If the shifter can't talk to the valve body, it'll lock you in Park.
