2021 Hino 268 - P0401 EGR Flow Insufficient

Question

I have a 2021 Hino box truck with the J08E engine. It's got 85,000 miles on it and the P0401 code keeps coming back. I've tried cleaning the EGR valve itself, but it didn't look that dirty. The truck runs fine, but it won't pass inspection with the light on.

Has anyone seen issues with the pressure sensors or the venture pipe on these newer Hinos? I'm trying to avoid taking it to the dealer if it's a simple fix.

✅ Confirmed fix: It's almost always the EGR differential pressure sensor 'pick-up' ports in the intake pipe. They get clogged with hard carbon. Use a small drill bit (by hand!) to clear the carbon out of the two small holes where the sensor hoses attach. Once cleared, the P0401 will go away.

P0401 on these is often the EGR cooler itself getting restricted. If the flow is low, cleaning the valve won't do much. You might need to pull the cooler and have it ultrasonic cleaned.
