2023 Hino 268 - P242F DPF Ash Accumulation on Low Mileage Truck

Question

This is a brand new Hino 268 with only 12,000 miles. I don't understand how the DPF is already full of 'ash' per the P242F code. Ash usually takes 200k+ miles to build up. The dealer is backed up for three weeks and I need this truck for local deliveries.

I tried doing a manual regen, but the truck rejects it saying 'Service Required'. Is it possible for a sensor to fail this early and give a false ash reading, or is my brand new engine actually creating that much soot?

✅ Confirmed fix: This is a known software glitch on the newer Hino/Cummins integration. The ECM incorrectly calculates ash load based on interrupted regen cycles during short-trip city driving. The fix is a firmware update from the dealer (TSIB) and a deep 'L3' reset of the aftertreatment history. The filter itself was likely fine, the computer just lost track of the math.

Verify your DEF quality. If someone put 'bad' DEF or water in the tank, the SCR can't reduce NOx, and the engine will run a richer EGR map to compensate, which will soot up the DPF very quickly. Check the refractometer reading of your DEF.
