2018 Kenworth T680 - Cummins X15 Fault Code 2562 VGT Issues

Question

My X15 is throwing an active 2562 code for the Turbocharger 1 Speed and it is stuck in derate. I can hear the turbo whistling louder than normal under light load and the throttle response is terrible. No other codes are present currently but the truck is barely pulling 15psi of boost.

Found the issue was a failed Turbocharger Speed Sensor (Part #4032068). I pulled the old sensor and found the tip was covered in heavy soot and the internal coil had failed ohm testing. I replaced the sensor, cleared the 2562 code with Cummins INSITE, and performed a VGT hysteresis test to confirm calibration. The part cost about $190 and the truck is pulling 38psi of boost again with no derate.

If the speed sensor didn't fail electrically, you might have a mechanical issue with the VGT ring or a piece of the compressor wheel hit the sensor tip. Take the intake hose off and spin the wheel by hand to check for play.
