2021 Hino 268 - P0404 EGR Performance - Limp Mode

Question

My Hino 268 box truck is stuck in limp mode. It won't go over 45mph and has zero acceleration. The scanner is showing P0404. I've heard these Hinos have major issues with the EGR systems getting carboned up.

I took the EGR valve off and it didn't look that bad—just a light coating of soot. I cleaned it with some brake cleaner and put it back on, but the code won't stay away for more than a mile. Is there a sensor I'm missing?

Check the EGR cooler. If it's leaking small amounts of coolant, it turns that soot into a thick paste that jams the valve quickly. Look for white crusty deposits inside the EGR piping.

✅ Confirmed fix: These 8.0L J08E engines have a common failure point in the EGR motor gear itself. The plastic gears strip and can't move the valve to the commanded position. Replaced the entire EGR valve assembly and performed the 'EGR Initialization' using Hino DX2 software. Fixed.
