2017 Honda Accord - Steering Rack Clicking / EPS Light

Question

My Accord has developed a strange clicking or popping sound whenever I'm parking or turning the wheel at low speeds. It feels like it's coming from right under the floorboards near the steering column.

No warning lights on the dash yet, but the steering feels slightly notched when turning through the center point. It's much worse when the weather is hot outside. I've checked the CV axles and they look fine.

✅ Confirmed fix: This is a known issue with the Electronic Power Steering (EPS) gearbox mounting bolts or the rack itself. In my case, it was the three mounting bolts for the steering rack that had stretched slightly. Retorquing them didn't work long-term; I had to replace the bolts with the updated part numbers and the clicking disappeared completely.

Check your strut top bearings. When those dry out or get grit in them, they will pop and click as the spring binds and releases during a turn. Have someone turn the wheel while you hold the coil spring—if you feel the vibration in the spring, it's the bearings, not the rack.
