2017 Honda Accord - Electronic Power Steering (EPS) Light On - U0401-00

Question

Driving down the road and suddenly the steering got very heavy and the EPS, ABS, and Traction Control lights all popped up. I pulled the code U0401 which says 'Invalid Data Received from ECM/PCM'.

I restarted the car and the steering worked for 5 minutes then failed again. I've checked the EPS fuse under the hood and it looks fine. It feels like the car just loses all power assist randomly.

✅ Confirmed fix: Found a rodent-chewed wire on the CAN-BUS line between the PCM and the Steering Rack motor. The U0401 code is a communication error. Repairing the two wires and re-shaping the harness protector fixed the communication break and restored steering assist.

This is often caused by a failing battery sensor on the negative terminal. If the PCM gets a weird voltage reading, it will shut down high-draw systems like the EPS to save power. Try unplugging the sensor and see if the steering returns.
