2015 Jaguar XF P0481 - Cooling Fan 2 Circuit Malfunction

Question

My XF started running hot in stop-and-go traffic, and I'm seeing a P0481 code on my scanner. The main fan seems to spin, but the auxiliary or second stage doesn't kick in even when the AC is on blast. I am worried about overheating the 3.0L SC engine because the temp gauge started creeping past the midpoint yesterday.

The issue was the Fan Control Module (Part #940009402) integrated into the fan shroud assembly. Internal solder joints on the PCB had cracked, causing an open circuit on the stage 2 trigger. I replaced the entire dual fan assembly (OEM part C2Z13763) which cost about $450. After installation and clearing codes, both fans now cycle correctly during the AC self-test and the P0481 has not returned.

Check the wiring harness connector going into the fan control module. These Jag modules are prone to corrosion at the pins, which increases resistance and trips the P0481 code. You might need to clean the contacts with some QD electronic cleaner.

You should use a bi-directional scan tool to command Fan 2 to 100% duty cycle. If you hear the relay click but the fan doesn't move, you likely have a dead motor segment or a failed pulse width modulation (PWM) controller attached to the shroud.

Check the ground strap located on the frame rail near the radiator support. A loose or rusty ground can cause the Fan 2 circuit to drop voltage, preventing the ECU from seeing the correct feedback loop.
