2015 Jaguar XF P0481 - Radiator Fan 2 Always Off

Question

My XF started running hot in stop-and-go traffic but stays cool on the highway. I hooked up my scanner and found P0481 stored in the PCM, and I noticed the large cooling fan never kicks on even when the AC is on max. The small auxiliary fan is spinning, but it clearly isn't enough to keep the temps down.

The issue was a corroded ground point (G1D124) located on the inner fender well behind the left headlamp. I cleaned the eyelet and replaced the bolt, but found the fan control module had also shorted out due to the high resistance. I replaced the radiator cooling fan assembly (Part #C2Z21287) which cost about $420 for the OEM Bosch unit. After clearing the P0481 code, both fans cycle perfectly according to the scanner data.

You need to measure for 12V power and ground at the large connector going directly to the fan motor while the car is running and AC is on. If you have power and ground but no fan movement, the internal MOSFETs in the fan module have likely failed, which requires a full shroud assembly replacement.

Check the purple signal wire going to the fan control module integrated into the fan shroud. These wires are notorious for corroding or breaking inside the loom near the driver side headlight area. If the PCM can't send the PWM signal, the fan won't trigger.

I had this same issue last month. Before buying a fan, swap the cooling fan relay found in the front power distribution box. Sometimes the contacts arc and stay open, preventing the high-speed circuit from energizing even if the PCM command is present.
