Intermittent U0753 Lost Communication with Gear Shift Module on Freightliner Cascadia

Question

Keep getting a dash warning and the truck won't shift out of neutral when starting in the morning. After cycling the key a few times it usually clears up, but today it stayed stuck for twenty minutes. The diagnostic tool shows U0753 as an active fault in the CPC but it toggles to inactive randomly.

The issue was a corroded pin in the bulkhead connector at the firewall (Pin 14). Water was leaking in through the windshield seal and dripping directly onto the connector backshell. I cleaned the pins with a wire brush, applied dielectric grease, and replaced the shift stalk assembly (Part# A06-85438-000) because the internal board had shorted out from the high resistance. Cost was about $450 for the part and 3 hours of labor. No issues since.

Check your voltage at the shifter stalk connector. If you have less than 12V while cranking, the TCM might be dropping communication due to a bad cell in one of the batteries or a corroded ground on the frame rail.

Check the resistance on the CAN line at the diagnostic port. It should be 60 ohms. If you're seeing 120 ohms, you have a dead terminating resistor or a break in the line preventing the signal from reaching the gear selector.

You need to check the J1939-5 backbone connector behind the dash. These Cascadias have a known issue where the green and yellow twisted pair rubs against the metal bracketry behind the instrument cluster.
