Volvo VNL 780 Intermittent Dash Blackout with U0753-00

Question

My 2018 Volvo VNL is having a strange issue where the main instrument cluster goes totally blank while driving, but the truck stays running fine. This usually happens after hitting a bump, and sometimes it comes back on after a few minutes of idling. I am seeing code U0753 active in the VECU history.

The issue was finally found at the X06A connector behind the center dash stack. Two pins for the CAN communication were loose in the connector housing (spread terminals). I replaced the terminal pins using the Volvo repair kit part #21010745 and secured the harness with better strain relief. Total cost was about $45 in parts and 4 hours of teardown and testing; the truck hasn't dropped the dash since.

I've seen this on several 2017-2019 Volvos where the DL1 and DL2 lines rub against the metal support bracket behind the glove box. Pull the top dash panel off and look for green crusties on the yellow/dark green twisted pair wires.

U0753 is specifically for lost communication with the dash. Since it happens over bumps, you likely have a pin fitment issue at the bulkhead connector or a chafed wire along the steering column harness.

Check the J1939 terminating resistors. If one of them is loose or failing, the CAN backbone can reflect signals and cause modules to drop off. You should have 60 ohms across pins C and D at the diagnostic port with the batteries disconnected.
