2012 Volvo VNL 780 - D13 - Sudden Shutdown - No Fault Codes

Question

I'm having a nightmare with this VNL. Driving down the road, the whole dash stays lit up, but the engine just cuts out like someone turned the key off. No sputter, no smoke, just gone. If I pull over and wait a few minutes, it fires right back up and might run for 5 miles or 500 miles.

I've had it to two shops and since it doesn't leave a code in the EMS, they tell me they can't find anything. We checked the batteries and cleaned all the ground lugs on the frame and the firewall.

✅ Confirmed fix: Found the 12V supply wire to the EMS (Engine Management System) had a 'green crusty' corrosion spot inside the insulation about 6 inches from the battery box. It was making enough contact to pass a multimeter test, but under high vibration/load, it would arc and lose connection momentarily, killing the ECM. Ran a new fused overlay wire directly from the battery to the ECM and it hasn't died since.

Check the crank position sensor. Sometimes they fail when they get hot and won't send a signal, but they won't always throw a code because the ECM thinks you just turned the engine off manually.
