2012 Volkswagen Jetta TDI - P2002 Particulate Trap Efficiency Below Threshold

My 2012 TDI just hit 120k miles and the DPF light came on along with a P2002 code. I've noticed that the tailpipes, which used to be perfectly clean, are now covered in black soot. Everything I read says that a DPF should filter 100% of that soot, so I'm worried the filter is cracked.

I tried taking it for a long 'Italian Tune-up' on the highway to trigger a regen, but the light stayed on. VCDS shows a high soot load and a very low differential pressure across the DPF. Is there any way to save this or am I looking at a multi-thousand dollar replacement?

✅ Confirmed fix: The DPF was indeed cracked, confirmed by the 'finger test' in the tailpipe showing heavy soot. This often happens on the CJAA engines when a failing EGR valve or sticking turbo vanes causes EGTs to spike or drop too rapidly, stressing the ceramic.

I had to replace the DPF assembly with a new unit and also replaced the LP-EGR cooler, as it was also clogged with the soot that leaked past the cracked DPF. Once the new hardware was in, I performed a 'DPF Service Initialization' using VCDS to tell the ECU the ash load was back to zero.

Check your EGR filter first. If the small EGR filter (the one that looks like a miniature muffler) is clogged with soot, it indicates the DPF has failed internally. If you see soot in the tailpipe of a DPF-equipped car, the ceramic substrate inside the DPF is cracked. No amount of cleaning will fix a physical crack.
