Fault Code 2348 - 2018 Peterbilt 579 Cummins X15 High Amperage EGR Valve

Question

I'm fighting a recurring 2348 code on my X15 engine which indicates the EGR valve control circuit current is above normal. The truck feels like it is losing power on pulls and I'm seeing a lot more soot accumulation than usual on my DPF gauge. It started as an intermittent check engine light but now it is staying on constantly.

The issue ended up being a combination of internal motor failure and a damaged pigtail. I replaced the EGR Valve (Part #4309434RX) and installed a new connector pigtail kit because the pins showed signs of heat damage. After clearing the codes and performing the EGR Valve Calibration via Cummins Insite, the truck is back to full power and the soot levels have stabilized. Total cost for parts was about $1,100 plus four hours of labor.

Is the valve physically stuck? Sometimes heavy carbon buildup prevents the butterfly from moving, and the actuator motor draws excessive current trying to force it open or closed.

You need to measure the resistance of the EGR motor itself using a multimeter. If the internal windings have failed or are shorted, it will pull way too many amps and trip the ECM protection.

Check the wiring harness where it runs over the top of the rocker housing. Those vibrations can cause the insulation to rub through on the valve control wires, causing a short to ground which triggers the high amperage code.
