2014 BMW 535i U0164 - No communication with IHKA panel, no blower or AC controls

Question

My F10 suddenly lost all power to the HVAC control unit on the dash today. The screen is completely black and none of the buttons for the seat heaters or fan speed are responding. I scanned it and got a U0164 code for lost communication with the HVAC module.

Found the issue was a failed IHKA3 Control Unit (Part #64119354142). After verifying 12V power at Pin 1 and a solid ground at Pin 2 of the X182 connector, I determined the internal board had shorted. Replaced the unit with a used module from eBay for $120 and performed the 'Initial Operation' service function using ISTA+ to code it to the vehicle's VO. Everything is back to normal now.

Verify if your blower motor regulator is shorting out. Sometimes a failed final stage resistor pulls down the communication line for the entire HVAC sub-system on these F-chassis cars.

Are there any other codes in the ZGM (Central Gateway Module)? Usually, if it's just U0164, the module itself isn't waking up. Test for 12V and ground at the connector behind the climate control faceplate before buying a new unit.

Check the CAN bus termination at the JB (Junction Box) module. If you have any water ingress from a clogged sunroof drain on the passenger side, the wiring harness at the footwell can corrode and kill the communication line to the IHKA.
