2014 BMW 535i U0164 No Communication with IHKA HVAC Module

Question

My F10 5-series suddenly has zero power to the climate control panel. The blower motor doesn't run, the display is completely black, and the buttons don't light up with the headlamps. Scanning the car with ISTA+ shows U0164 and the IHKA module is red on the control unit tree.

The issue turned out to be a damaged K-CAN2 wiring harness located behind the glovebox. A rodent had chewed through the green/orange twisted pair wires. I repaired the wiring with 0.5mm lead wire and heat shrink, then cleared the U0164 code in ISTA. Everything powered back up immediately without needing a new IHKA module or any coding. Total cost was just the time for the harness repair.

Check the LIN bus wiring between the IHKA and the JBE. Frequently, a shorted auxiliary water pump or a failed blower regulator can pull down the communication line and make the whole module look dead to the gateway.

Are you getting 12V at the main connector behind the IHKA panel? Pin 1 should be constant power. If you have power and ground but no communication, the internal processor in the IHKA panel has likely failed.

Check for moisture in the passenger footwell. If the sunroof drains are clogged, water can leak onto the ZGM/Gateway module or the junction box, causing CAN bus communication errors like U0164.
