2007 Lexus ES350 P2716 Transmission Solenoid Electrical Fault

Question

My Lexus just went into limp mode yesterday and the VSC/Check Engine lights are both on. The car is stuck in 3rd or 4th gear and won't shift down when I stop, making it very sluggish to take off. I pulled the code P2716 which points to the SLT solenoid electrical circuit.

The issue turned out to be the SLT solenoid itself (Part #35290-45010). I dropped the pan, removed the valve body, and found the solenoid had an internal short when it got hot. I replaced the linear solenoid, installed a new filter, and refilled with 4 quarts of Toyota WS fluid. The total cost was about $230 for parts and it has been shifting perfectly for two weeks now.

Keep in mind that on the U660E transmissions used in this year, a failing Engine Control Module (ECM) is actually a common cause for solenoid electrical codes. Toyota had several TSBs regarding internal solder joint failures on the driver circuits for these solenoids.

Before you drop the pan, check the transmission harness connector on the back of the trans case for any signs of corrosion or trans fluid wicking into the pins. P2716 is often a wiring issue between the ECM and the solenoid, and these connectors can get brittle and crack over time.

You need to measure the resistance of the SLT solenoid (Pressure Control Solenoid D) directly at the ECM pins. It should be between 5.0 and 5.6 ohms at room temperature. If it reads open or has excessive resistance, the solenoid itself is toast or there is a break in the internal wire harness.
