2019 Volvo VNL 760 - I-Shift Grinding into Gear - No Alarm Codes

Question

My 2019 VNL with the I-Shift transmission has started making a nasty grinding sound when I first put it in gear from a dead stop. Once it's moving, it shifts through the gears relatively smooth, but that initial engagement is getting worse.

There are no codes on the dash and Volvo Tech Tool isn't showing any active faults. I had the trans oil changed 40k miles ago. It feels like the clutch isn't fully disengaging or the countershaft brake isn't stopping the internals fast enough.

✅ Confirmed fix: The Concentric Slave Cylinder (CSC) was leaking air internally, preventing the clutch from fully releasing. We replaced the clutch assembly and the slave cylinder. We also found the pilot bearing was seized, which is why it was grinding—the input shaft was always spinning.

Try doing a clutch calibration via Premium Tech Tool. Sometimes the engagement point drifts as the disc wears and the software just needs to relearn the travel limits.
