Volvo VNL D13 - SPN 2137 FMI 11 Engine Torque Overshoot and Jerking

Question

I have a 2018 Volvo VNL that is throwing a code for Driveline Torque Converter State and the truck is jerking hard during upshifts. I am losing power intermittently on hills and the dash shows a 'Check Transmission' warning. The issue seems to happen mostly once the transmission reaches operating temperature.

The issue was the Clutch Release Bearing and a failing Concentric Slave Cylinder. The bearing was binding on the input shaft guide sleeve, preventing a smooth transition which triggered the torque mismatch code. We replaced the clutch kit (Part #23165604), the slave cylinder, and the pilot bearing. After a successful calibration via PTT and clearing the adaptive values, the truck shifts perfectly. Total parts cost was around $2,800 plus 10 hours of labor.

You might be looking at a failing clutch actuator/servo. If the air supply to the actuator is contaminated with oil or moisture, the clutch won't release smoothly, causing the engine to fight the driveline and throw that 2137 code.

Check your wiring harness going to the transmission control module (TECU). These Volvos are known for rubbing the harness against the chassis rail which causes cross-talk on the CAN bus and messes up torque signals.

Verify the engine speed sensor and the output shaft speed sensor. If the ECM and TCM don't agree on the shaft speeds, the torque converter logic (even in an AMT) will freak out and default to a limp mode.
