Cruise control won't engage on 2018 Freightliner Cascadia - Code P0565

I'm having trouble getting my cruise control to stay active. Occasionally it works for ten minutes, but usually, it just refuses to engage when I hit the 'on' switch. The dashboard shows a fault icon and I pulled code P0565 from the diagnostic port.

The issue was a damaged steering wheel clock spring (part number A22-68045-000). The internal ribbon cable for the 'ON' signal had a hairline fracture. Replaced the clock spring after ensuring the steering wheel was centered and wheels were straight. Cost for the part was $215 and it took about an hour to swap out, torqueing the steering wheel nut back to 45 ft-lbs. Cruis control works perfectly now.

P0565 is specifically for the ON signal circuit. You need to look at the clock spring in the steering column or the wire harness running from the steering wheel to the bulkhead module. Use a multimeter to check for continuity while turning the wheel.

Check the pins on the J1939 CAN bus backbone near the steering colum. If you have high resistance on the CAN lines, the signal from the steering wheel switches won't reach the MCM or CPC correctly.
