2018 Mitsubishi Outlander SRS Light On - Code B2236 Diagnosis

Question

My SRS warning light popped up on the dash yesterday and won't go away. I scanned the system with my Autel and pulled code B2236 which points to a grounding fault in the SRS-ECU. The car hasn't been in any accidents, but I did just have the interior detailed last week.

Found the issue. I pulled the center console trim and found the main SRS-ECU ground wire (Black/Yellow) bolt was loose. It looked like it had been previously touched; I cleaned the eyelet with a wire brush, applied a bit of dielectric grease, and torqued it back down to 9Nm. After tightening the ground and clearing the code with the scanner, the SRS light stayed off and the system passed self-test. Total cost was $0 for parts.

Before replacing the module, verify the voltage drop between the SRS unit casing and the negative battery terminal. It should be less than 0.1V. If you see higher, you have a physical wiring issue rather than a failed ECU.

Check the floor harness under the center console. If the detailers used a lot of liquid cleaner or steam, moisture might have seeped into the SRS-ECU connector pins causing a high resistance ground path.
