Mazda 3 Stuck in 3rd Gear - P0751 Shift Solenoid A Performance

Question

My 2012 Mazda 3 started acting up yesterday, feeling like it is stuck in limp mode and won't drop into 1st gear when stopping at lights. The AT light came on the dash and it feels very sluggish when trying to accelerate from a standstill. I scanned it and got a P0751 code which says it is a performance issue with solenoid A.

The issue was a failing Transmission Control Module (TCM) located on top of the trans case. These Ford-era Mazda modules are notorious for internal solder failures due to heat and vibration. I replaced the TCM with a remanufactured unit from a specialist for $350, mounted it to the firewall instead of the transmission to keep it cool, and the P0751 went away immediately. Shifts are now crisp and the AT light is gone.

I would recommend doing a drain and fill first with genuine Mazda FZ fluid. If the fluid is burnt, the debris might be clogging the internal screen of the Shift Solenoid A (SSA) preventing it from seating correctly.

P0751 is a performance code, not a circuit code, which usually means the TCM is seeing an incorrect gear ratio rather than an open wire. It could be a stuck valve in the valve body or a tired solenoid that can't move against line pressure anymore.

Before you tear into the transmission, check the wiring harness connector on top of the trans case for corrosion. These Mazdas are known for getting road salt in the connectors which causes high resistance for the solenoid circuits.
