2011 BMW 335i E90 - Crank No Start - P0087 Fuel Rail Pressure Too Low

Question

My 335i has been having longer and longer starts over the last week. This morning it finally refused to start at all. It just cranks and cranks. I hooked up my scanner and I'm seeing P0087 Fuel Rail Pressure Too Low.

I can hear the fuel pump in the tank prime when I open the door. I pulled the codes and got 2FBE as well. The car has 95k miles and has been Stage 1 tuned for about 10k miles. Is this a High Pressure Fuel Pump failure or could it be the sensor?

✅ Confirmed fix: It was the High Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP). These N55 pumps aren't as bad as the N54 ones, but they still fail regularly. I swapped in a new Bosch unit and the car fired up instantly. The rail pressure jumped from 80psi during cranking to over 1000psi immediately upon start. Be sure to replace the high-pressure line as well per the service manual.

Check the Low Pressure Fuel Sensor (LPFS) located on the feed line before the HPFP. If that sensor fails, it can give erratic readings to the DME and cause a no-start condition. Also, log the fuel pressure while cranking; if the rail pressure stays at 5-7 bar (tank pressure), then your HPFP isn't activating.

It could be the EKPS (fuel pump control module) overheating. If it gets too hot, it cuts power to the LPFP and you'll get low rail pressure. Open the trunk and check if the module is scorching hot to the touch after a few crank attempts.
