Service Stability Message - Cadillac CTS C0896 Electronic Suspension Control

Question

I am getting a Service Suspension System message on my dash along with a Service Stabilitrak light. The car feels noticeably stiffer over bumps and seems stuck in a firmer damping mode. I scanned it and pulled a C0896 code related to device voltage range/performance.

The issue was a failing Electronic Suspension Control Module (ESCM) located in the trunk. After testing the harness and finding stable battery voltage at the connector pins, I replaced the module with GM part #23119560. I had to perform the 'Module Setup' and 'Ride Height Calibration' using a specialized scan tool after installation; once calibrated, the code cleared and the MagneRide returned to normal operation. Total cost was about $320 for the module plus shop time for the programming.

You need to look at the live data for the shock absorbers using a Tech2 or similar scan tool. If one of the MagneRide shocks has a shorted internal coil, it can pull the reference voltage down and throw this code.

Inspect the wiring harness near the rear wheel wells. The wires leading to the ride height sensors and the shocks often rub against the fender liner, causing a high-resistance short that the module interprets as a voltage performance failure.

Check the grounding point for the Electronic Suspension Control (ESC) module. On these models, if the ground wire G402 becomes corroded, it can cause voltage fluctuations that trigger C0896.
