Question

My 6.0 Powerstroke died while merging onto the highway and now it won't restart without a long crank. I am getting a persistent P0251 code and the truck seems to have zero power when it finally does fire up. It feels like it is starving for fuel especially under load.

The issue turned out to be a failing Fuel Volume Control Valve (FVCV) integrated into the high-pressure pump. I performed a fuel flow test and found the return rates were way out of spec. I replaced the pump assembly (XC3Z-9A543-ARM) and the updated IPR valve. Total part cost was about $850, and the truck now holds 58 psi under wide-open throttle with no more stalling.

Since you mentioned the 6.0 specifically, don't overlook the IPR valve. If the screen is carboned up or the O-rings are blown, it will cause metering errors that trigger this code because the HPO system can't stabilize.

P0251 on a Ford diesel often points to a sync issue between the demand for fuel and what the IMV or high pressure pump can actually provide. Check your fuel pressure at the secondary filter housing; you should see at least 45 psi at idle.
