2018 Chevy Silverado B1001 after SDM Replacement

Question

I recently replaced the Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM) on my 2018 Silverado because the old one was water damaged. I plugged the new unit in, but now the airbag light is on and I am pulling code B1001. It says Option Configuration Error and I can't clear it with my basic scan tool.

The issue was resolved by using a GM MDI 2 interface and a subscription to ACDelco TDS (SPS2). I had to perform the 'Sensing and Diagnostic Module Programming and Setup' procedure. This synchronized the VIN and the internal configuration options between the BCM and the new SDM. The process took about 15 minutes, cost $45 for the 2-year VIN slot subscription, and the B1001 code cleared immediately after the ignition cycle.

You need to perform the Setup New SDM procedure using a GM MDI or a high-end scan tool like a Snap-On Zeus. It has to sync the setup options from the BCM to the new airbag module.

Did you buy a used SDM or a brand new one? If it is used, it might be locked to the previous vehicle's VIN, which makes it much harder to reconfigure without specialized EEPROM tools.
