2018 Cummins ISX15 - Code 2348 - EGR Valve Circuit Current High

Question

My truck just threw a derate warning and I'm seeing Fault Code 2348 on the dash. I'm losing power on the pulls and the engine sounds a bit more muffled than usual. I checked the connector at the valve and it isn't melted, but the code keeps coming back as soon as I clear it.

The issue was a failed internal motor in the EGR Actuator. I performed a resistance test across pins 1 and 2 and found it was below 2 ohms, indicating an internal short. Replaced the EGR Valve Actuator (Part #4387304RX) and performed the 'EGR Valve Calibration' using Insite. The truck has been running clear for 2,500 miles now; total cost for the part was about $950 plus the core charge.

Sometimes the actual butterfly valve inside the housing gets carboned up and stuck. If the motor tries to force it open against a mechanical obstruction, the current draw spikes and sets the code.

Check the wiring harness where it sweeps over the valve cover. Rub-throughs against the fuel lines or the bracket can cause a short to ground, which the ECM sees as a high current state.
