2018 Chevy Silverado 1500 - Service Stabilitrak and Heavy Steering C0450-00

Question

My 2018 Silverado just popped a Service Power Steering message on the DIC and the wheel became extremely heavy to turn at low speeds. It felt like the power assist cut out completely while pulling into a parking spot. I scanned it with my Autel and pull a C0450-00 code for the Steering Assist Control Actuator Circuit.

The issue turned out to be internal failure of the electronic steering rack assembly. I performed a pin-out test at the X2 connector and had proper power and ground, but the internal motor actuator was stuck. I replaced the entire rack with a new OEM unit (GM Part #84682315). After installation, I had to use a MDI2 to perform the SPS programming and the Torque Sensor Calibration. The steering is now butter smooth and the C0450 code hasn't returned.

Sometimes this code can be triggered by a software glitch in the Power Steering Control Module. Check if there is a TSB for a flash update before you go replacing the entire steering gear assembly.

Verify you have constant 12V at the main power connector on the rack itself. If the voltage drops under load when you turn the wheel, you likely have a corroded power cable or a bad battery/alternator causing the PSCM to shut down.

Check the ground connection on the frame right below the driver side door. These K2XX trucks are notorious for poor grounds causing communication issues with the electronic power steering (EPS) module.
