2016 Acura MDX P0459 Purge Control Valve Circuit High

Question

My 2016 MDX just popped the Check Engine Light and an 'Emission System Problem' warning on the dash. I scanned it and got code P0459, which says the purge control valve circuit is high. The car seems to idle a bit rougher than usual after I fuel up, but otherwise it drives fine.

The issue was a shorted internal coil in the Purge Control Solenoid Valve. I replaced the valve with an OEM Acura part (Part #36162-RDV-J01) which cost about $95. After installation and clearing the code, the voltage returned to normal range and the rough idle after refueling disappeared. Make sure to torque the mounting bolts to 7 lb-ft and verify the vacuum hoses are seated tightly.

I had this on a TLX recently and it was a rodent that chewed through the harness right near the firewall. Make sure you trace the harness back from the intake manifold to ensure the signal wire isn't touching a power source.

P0459 usually means the PCM is seeing a voltage signal higher than expected on the control circuit. This is often caused by a short to power in the wiring harness or a failed solenoid coil that has gone open/high resistance.

Check the connector at the purge valve for any signs of corrosion or moisture. You should also use a multimeter to check for 12V at the power wire with the key on; if that is good, the issue is likely the valve itself or the ground side wire back to the ECU.
