2012 Mini Cooper S P1765 CAN Transmission Message Incorrect and Limp Mode

Question

My R56 is stuck in limp mode and the dash is showing a gear symbol with an exclamation point. I scanned it with an Autel and I am getting P1765 for an incorrect transmission message on the CAN bus. The car stays in 3rd gear and shifts very hard when moving from Park to Drive.

The issue was caused by a corroded ground strap and a partially pinned-out wire in the X6000 connector. After deep cleaning the main engine-to-chassis ground and replacing the corroded pins in the connector housing (BMW repair kit 61138364834), the communication was restored. Cost for the terminal pins was under $25, and the car now shifts perfectly through all gears without throwing the P1765 code.

Check the battery voltage first. These Coopers act very strange when the battery is dying or if the IBS sensor is failing, often throwing communication codes between the DME and EGS.

You need to pull the connector off the transmission control module and check for corrosion. It is common for oil or coolant to wick through the harness and mess up the pins on the CAN lines.

Check the wiring harness near the starter motor. The harness can rub against the metal brackets and fray the twisted pair CAN wires, which will drop the signal to the transmission.
