2008 Mitsubishi L200 Triton P2146 Engine Cutting Out

Question

My L200 2.5 DI-D suddenly lost power on the highway and the check engine light started flashing. The engine is running on three cylinders and has a very loud knocking sound when I try to accelerate. I scanned it and got a persistent P2146 code that won't clear for more than a few seconds.

The issue turned out to be a shorted solenoid on injector #1. When I tested with a multimeter, injector #1 showed 0.0 ohms (dead short), while the others were at 0.4 ohms. I replaced the faulty injector with a new Denso unit (Part #1465A041), coded the new IMA ID into the ECU using a scan tool, and the truck is running smoothly again. Cost was about $320 for the part.

If the wiring and injectors check out, you might be looking at a failed EDU (Electronic Driving Unit) or the capacitor inside the ECU that handles the injector firing voltage. I've seen a few of these fail after water ingress in the cabin.

P2146 usually points to a short circuit in the wiring harness or a failed solenoid inside one of the injectors in Bank 1. Start by measuring the resistance of each injector; they should be around 0.2 to 0.5 ohms on these Denso systems.

Check the wiring harness where it passes over the back of the cylinder head. These are notorious for rubbing against the metal lifting eye or the heat shield, which shorts the high-voltage supply line to ground.
