2014 Audi A4 2.0T P1064 Fuel Rail Pressure Low - Bucking under load

Question

My A4 started stuttering and went into limp mode yesterday while accelerating on the highway. I hooked up my scanner and I am getting a persistent P1064 code for fuel pressure control mechanical malfunction. The car idles okay but any time I give it more than 25% throttle it loses all power and feels like it is starving for fuel.

The issue was the High Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP) internal spill valve sticking. I replaced the unit with a new Bosch 06J127025L pump and a fresh cam follower (06L109311). After installation and clearing the adaptations with a scan tool, the rail pressure stayed steady at 150 bar under wide-open throttle and the P1064 has not returned. Total part cost was about $240 and took 45 minutes to install.

If your rail pressure is jumping around wildly at idle, also inspect the fuel pressure sensor on the rail itself. Sometimes the connector gets oil in it from a leaking valve cover gasket which causes signal interference.

Check the cam follower for the HPFP before you buy any parts. These TFSI engines are notorious for wearing through the follower, which prevents the pump from getting the full stroke from the camshaft lobe.

You should use VCDS to log Group 106 and 140. Compare the specified vs actual rail pressure; if the actual pressure drops significantly when the code triggers, it is likely your high pressure fuel pump (HPFP) failing internally.
