Fiat Ducato Airbag Light B1041 Driver Pretensioner Open Circuit

Question

My 2018 Ducato just failed its inspection because the SRS airbag light is staying on. I scanned it with an Autel and got code B1041 which specifically points to the driver's seat belt pretensioner circuit being open. I've tried clearing the code but it returns immediately every time the ignition is cycled.

I found the issue was a broken wire inside the yellow connector under the driver's seat. The purple/green wire had snapped right at the terminal inside the plug due to the seat being moved frequently. I cut out the factory yellow connector and replaced it with a high-quality 2-pin waterproof connector (Part #1-967644-1 style). After crimping the new terminals and securing the harness with more slack, I cleared the code and the light stayed off. Cost was only about $15 in parts and an hour of labor.

If you have a 2.2 ohm resistor, you can momentarily jump the pins on the harness side (car side) of the pretensioner connector. If the code clears or changes to 'resistance too low', then you know the wiring to the module is good and the seatbelt mechanism itself is faulty.

The B1041 code usually indicates an issue with the wiring or the squib itself. Check the pins on the yellow connector under the seat to ensure they haven't backed out. Fiat wiring harnesses are notorious for being a bit short, and sliding the seat back can pull on them.

Make sure you disconnect the battery for at least 30 minutes before probing any SRS components. I have seen the clock spring cause similar issues on steering wheel airbags, but for the B1041 on the pretensioner, it is strictly isolated to the buckle or the B-pillar retractor depending on which specific 'pre-tensioner' your trim level uses.
