Eaton UltraShift Plus 81-11 Code - Intermittent No Shift J1939 Link Loss

Question

My 2014 Kenworth is intermittently throwing a Code 81 and dropping into neutral while driving. When it happens, the gear indicator on the dash goes blank and the transmission won't respond to the shift stalk at all. It usually resets after I cycle the key, but it's becoming more frequent.

The issue was a chafed harness in the OEM backbone near the bell housing. The J1939 Yellow and Green wires had rubbed through the loom and were shorting against a bracket, causing the Link Loss. I cut out the damaged section, soldered in new twisted-pair wire, and applied adhesive-lined heat shrink. Total cost was about $15 in materials and 4 hours of shop labor for the harness trace.

Verify if you have any other codes in the Engine or ABS modules. If the Engine ECM is losing power, the Eaton will throw code 81 because it can't see the engine on the bus anymore. Look for a common power relay issue in the PDM.

Check the terminating resistors on the J1939 backbone. If one of them has high resistance, you'll get packet loss that causes the TECU to lose the engine torque message. You should see 60 ohms across CAN High and CAN Low with the batteries disconnected.

The Eaton UltraShift is very sensitive to voltage drops. Even if your fuses look good, check the battery power lead that runs directly to the Transmission Electronic Control Unit. Those wires often rub through near the starter or the rear of the engine block.
