2010 GMC Terrain Power Steering Service Message - C0475

Question

My steering suddenly got very heavy while pulling into a parking spot and the 'Service Power Steering' warning popped up on the DIC. I can still drive it but it feels like a manual rack and I'm worried my wife won't be able to turn the wheel. Scanned it and found a hard code C0475 in the Power Steering Control Module.

The issue was the Electric Power Steering Motor and Module assembly itself. I sourced a remanufactured unit (Part #19257875) for about $280. Installation requires dropping the lower steering column trim and unbolting the motor from the rack/column assembly. After installing the new motor and performing the software setup/calibration with a Tech2, the steering assist returned immediately and the C0475 code has not returned.

Check the connector right at the EPS motor on the steering column. These are known for pin tension issues or getting kicked by feet under the dash, which can drop the signal to the motor.

You need to check for battery voltage at the 2-pin heavy gauge connector at the motor. If you have 12V and a good ground there but the code won't clear, the internal motor brushless controller has likely failed.

If you end up replacing the motor, make sure you perform the 'Steering Wheel Position Sensor Centering' procedure with a scan tool or the assist won't feel right coming off center.
